Complications of shingles on the abdomen
As a rule, the symptoms of shingles on the stomach subside after a few weeks without complications. Sometimes, however, complications can occur. If the blisters have been scratched open during the disease, bleeding and melting may occur in these areas of the skin.
Irreversible pigmentation disturbances or scars can develop in these areas. In addition, a so-called post-herpetic neuralgia can develop. This is characterized by nerve pain and sensitivity disorders with numbness.This pain can occur immediately after the disease or weeks after the rash has subsided. In case of a weak immune system or increased age, post-zosteric neuralgia may also develop. This pain can take a chronic development.
How contagious is shingles?
The content of the liquid-filled vesicles of the rash on the abdomen is contagious. This means that only direct contact with this liquid is infectious. As a rule, only those persons who have not yet had chickenpox are at risk of becoming infected.
This means only those people who do not already carry the virus. In people who already carry the virus, renewed contact can only cause shingles in immunocompromised people.
