Conditional Skills German: Condition

Introduction

The term condition is often used incorrectly in everyday life as a synonym for endurance. However, this is only a subfield of condition. From the Latin translation the condition is understood as “condition”.

Applied to sport as the ability to perform athletic achievements. In addition to the endurance already mentioned, strength, speed and mobility are also considered to be conditional abilities. Every athlete must therefore adapt the degree of individual conditional characteristics to his or her own sporting requirements.

A marathon runner will certainly have a lower strength potential than a shot-putter or strength athlete and vice versa. Therefore the statement that a marathon runner has a better condition than a strength athlete is simply wrong. In addition, there is an overlap in the respective conditional abilities.

This can be e.g. the speed strength etc. Detailed information can be found in the lower paragraph. Individual sports have different conditional requirements, so athletes and coaches have to consider which conditional ability has to be trained in the training. Below you will find a list of the most varied requirements in game sports.

What is condition

Condition does not only include endurance, as many people claim, but is an umbrella term and consists of several factors: strength, endurance, speed and mobility. Besides, condition is also a subordinate term for the generic term physical performance. The distribution of the individual abilities is very individual and each person has different strengths and differently pronounced conditional abilities.

Condition is a factor of athletic performance is determined by the composition of the above-mentioned motor characteristics. A good condition is equated with a uniformly pronounced high level of development of the motor properties strength, speed, endurance and mobility. Depending on the type of sport, the level of development of the conditional properties varies.

This is because each sport has a different requirement profile for which the athletes must adjust and prepare. The conditional abilities can also be divided into further sub-groups, which allows you to structure your training plan even more precisely. Strength ability is divided into maximum strength, explosive strength, strength endurance and reactive strength.

The speed abilities are reaction speed, acceleration speed and movement speed. Short-term endurance, medium-term endurance and long-term endurance belong to the endurance abilities. Mobility can be divided into joint mobility and stretching ability. After this division, you can adapt and design your training plan specifically to the requirement profile of your own sport.
