Congo Ointment

Products

Congo Ointment was a registered drug in many countries since 1937 and was available in pots and tubes (Bahnhof-Apotheke Thaler, St. Gallen). It has not been on the market as a finished drug since 2015. Some pharmacies still prepare it as an in-house product. Comparable zinc ointments are available. We are not aware of a reference to the Republic of Congo in Africa.

Structure and properties

1 g of ointment contains 80 mg of zinc oxide, lanolin as a base, flavoring agents, other excipients, and the preservative chlorhexidine diacetate.

Effects

The ointment has wound healing and antiseptic properties. Zinc ointments also have additional drying, astringent, and skin-protective effects. The effects are based on the release of zinc ions from the ointment.
