Conjugated Estrogens

Products

Conjugated estrogens have been approved in many countries since 2015 in fixed combination with bazedoxifene (Duavive). Other preparations, such as Premarin and Premella, are off-label in many countries. Other products are available in other countries, such as the United States.

Structure and properties

Unlike other drugs, conjugated estrogens do not contain a single defined active ingredient but a mixture of different substances. They are obtained from the urine of pregnant mares and consist of the sodium salts of water-soluble estrogen sulfates. The two main components are sodium trisulphate and sodium quiline sulphate. In addition, other related substances are included. The active ingredients are also produced synthetically. They are present as white to brownish amorphous powder.

Effects

Conjugated estrogens (ATC G03CA57) have estrogenic properties. They bind to estrogen receptors as agonists.

Indications

For treatment of symptoms of estrogen deficiency in postmenopausal women.
