Consequences of smoking in combination with alcohol consumption

Apart from smoking, alcohol is probably the most consumed luxury food in Germany. In many cases both are consumed at the same time, often in excessive amounts. The harmful consequences of smoking and alcohol do not add up, but rather increase.

Typical consequences of smoking in connection with alcohol affect the mouth and esophagus, the stomach and the pancreas. There is an increase in stomach ulcers and inflammation of the overlying mucous membranes in the mouth and esophagus. Smoking and alcohol are also the main risk factors for tumors at this site.

Other risk factors include the development of reflux disease, in which gastric juice flows back into the oesophagus, as well as inflammation and also the occurrence of cancer of the pancreas. Mouth cancer is almost always associated with smoking and alcohol. In addition, the consequences of smoking or alcohol consumption alone can still occur, so that frequent consumption of nicotine and alcohol is a particularly risky lifestyle.
