Conservative Dentistry

The goal of conservative dentistry (synonyms: conservative dentistry; tooth preservation) is to preserve teeth. Dental health plays the most important role, immediately followed by aesthetic considerations. Carious teeth can be the focus of treatment, as can caries-free teeth that have been damaged by periodontitis or trauma (a dental accident).

To preserve the teeth, the dentist offers a wide range of therapeutic options:

  • Carious defects are treated with a wide variety of fillings, inlays and onlays made of materials such as plastic, gold and ceramic.
  • Milk teeth can be stabilized with ready-made milk tooth crowns in their use phase.
  • The restoration of a tooth whose natural crown is deeply destroyed with an artificial crown is one of the prosthetic measures, but ultimately serves to preserve the tooth.
  • If the advanced caries has led to damage to the dental pulp (the pulp), we are helped with endodontic measures such as a root canal treatment with root canal filling or a revision.
  • In the broadest sense, the root tip resection (synonyms: WSR; surgical removal of the root tip) is also a tooth-preserving measure.
  • Even teeth displaced in the jaw can be preserved to the dentition by surgical measures such as tooth transplants and tooth transpositions.
  • After exposure to trauma (dental accident), stabilization of loosened teeth may allow their preservation.
  • Diseases of the oral mucosa and periodontium such as gingivitis and periodontitis are treated to preserve the periodontium and thus the stable anchorage of a tooth in its bony environment.
