Constipation in Children: Causes and Treatments

Long sessions on the quiet little toilet can also be a problem for children and be accompanied by complaints such as abdominal pain, nausea, flatulence as well as vomiting.

If it “falters” with the little ones, this is most often caused by an incorrect diet. As with adults, this can be prevented by a high-fiber diet and sufficient fluid intake. However, especially in the case of persistent constipation, a doctor should always be consulted to determine whether there is an organic cause. Some metabolic diseases can make themselves felt with constipation.

Measures against constipation

The general therapeutic measures for functional constipation are no different from those for adults: a high-fiber diet, intake of plenty of low-calorie fluids, and plenty of exercise and sports.

Affected children should avoid foods that are low in fiber and constipating. These include pasta, rice, white bread and also fast food. High-fiber foods include vegetables and fruits, potatoes, and whole-grain products. This is where you as parents come in!

Train bowel movements with toilet training

An important measure for children with constipation is stool training in the form of regular visits to the toilet. Talk to your pediatrician about toilet training, he can certainly help you with his experience.

Sour milk for constipation

Sour milk products have a digestive regulating effect and support a favorable intestinal flora. They are created with the help of lactic acid bacteria from milk, in which lactose is fermented to lactic acid. Sour milk products include soured milk, buttermilk, ayran and sour cream.

Lactulose, guar or oat bran can have a supporting effect. The individually tolerated amount depends on age. Ask your pharmacist about possible forms of preparation. Laxatives, on the other hand, should never be taken by children with constipation for a long time.
