Contraindications | Bepanthen® eye drops

Contraindications

When using Bepanthen® eye drops, there are few contraindications that must be considered. An important contraindication is known allergies or hypersensitivity to one or more of the ingredients contained. Furthermore Bepanthen® eye drops should not be used if the containers are damaged.

Single-dose containers are also intended for single use only, as no preservatives are contained. Residues of the solution must therefore not be used any more. After the expiry date, the eye drops must be discarded.

Application to injured or infected eyes should also be avoided. If several eye drops and/or eye ointments are used simultaneously, an application interval of 15 minutes should be observed. Bepanthen eye drops should be used as the last preparation in this case.

Dosage

One drop of the eye drops should be applied per eye with each application. This procedure can be repeated between 3 and 5 times daily per eye, depending on the symptoms and feeling of dryness. In the case of long-term use, however, it is essential to clarify the cause of the complaints, otherwise they cannot be eliminated. Even if the symptoms persist despite the Bepanthen® eye drops, a doctor should be consulted as soon as possible.

Price

The price for Bepanthen® eye drops varies slightly depending on the pharmacy. Sometimes online pharmacies offer discounts or quantity discounts. Even in ordinary pharmacies you will often find discounts on over-the-counter products that must be purchased privately. The price for a multi-dose bottle of Bepanthen® eye drops (Bepanthen® eye drops, 10 ml) is about 9.20 Euro, in total the price varies between 8 and 10 Euro. Also the single-dose containers (Bepanthen® eye drops, 20×0.5ml) are in the same price range.

Alternative preparations

Apart from Bepanthen® eye drops, there are other alternative preparations that are well suited for moistening the eye and stabilizing the tear film. These include various hyaluronic acid eye drops, such as Artelac® Splash EDO®, Hylo-Vision® Gel sine or dm®/Das gesunde Plus® eye drops. Apart from hyaluronic acid eye drops, various hypromellose eye drops are also suitable as an alternative to Bepanthen eye drops. Similar to hyaluronic acid, hypromellose also promotes the moistening of the eye and stabilizes the tear film. Examples for preparations of this group are Berberil® Dry Eye and Artelac® EDO®.

Use during pregnancy

The use of Bepanthen-Augentropfen® is harmless as long as there is no hypersensitivity or allergy to the ingredients contained. Provided that the general instructions for the use of Bepanthen eye drops are observed and followed, there is no reason not to use Bepanthen® eye drops during pregnancy.

Application to the baby

In principle, the use of Bepanthen® eye drops is safe for babies. However, it is very important to determine the cause of dry eyes. In babies and children there is usually an underlying disease behind the dry eyes, so that eye drops can provide relief but cannot eliminate the cause. For this reason, a paediatrician should always be consulted and, if necessary, a specialist ophthalmologist should be consulted later. Before using Bepanthen® eye drops on an infant, the paediatrician or a specialised ophthalmologist should be consulted first for safety reasons.
