Contraindications | Blood Thinner

Contraindications

Blood thinners of any kind should not be taken if there is an increased risk of bleeding. These include, for example, congenital diseases of the coagulation system or gastrointestinal bleeding. Surgery should also not be carried out under Marcumar®, so that 2 weeks before and after the planned operation, no surgery should be performed.

Complications

The main complication that can occur during therapy with a blood thinner is bleeding. Since the body’s own coagulation system is shut down, the risk of spontaneous bleeding is always present, even if it is naturally low when the values are correctly adjusted. Gastric bleeding, but also life-threatening cerebral haemorrhage is possible. In addition, hemostasis is greatly delayed in the case of banal injuries and the skin tends to bruise easily.

Forecast

Blood thinners are among the most important groups of drugs today. They have greatly reduced the risk of life-threatening thromboses and vascular occlusions and lowered the number of new heart attacks or strokes. Long-term studies report an increased life expectancy in almost all patients receiving appropriate therapy with antiplatelet aggregation inhibitors or anticoagulants.

In addition, the stent therapy option would not be conceivable without ASA. Nevertheless, there is a certain risk of severe internal bleeding. On careful consideration of the advantages and disadvantages, however, the benefit of blood thinners is undisputed.
