Contraindications

As with other drugs, there are contraindications for Doxepin, which makes it impossible to take Doxepin:

  • Hypersensitivity to doxepin or related substances
  • Delir (clouding of consciousness with additional sensory delusions or delusions)
  • Narrow Angle Glaucoma
  • Acute urinary retention
  • Prostatic hyperplasia (enlargement of the prostate gland) with additional residual urine formation
  • For intestinal paralysis
  • During breastfeeding, as the active ingredient can pass into the breast milk
  • Children under 12 years old.

Cautious use

Doxepin can be taken under certain circumstances, but constant supervision by a doctor is necessary. Care should be taken in case of: severe liver damage, blood formation disorders, prostate hyperplasia without residual urine, increased tendency to cramps, potassium deficiency, slowed heart rate (bradycardia), in case of heart diseases affecting mainly the excitatory conduction system or vessels, such as : in QT syndrome. There are currently insufficient results on the effects of doxepin during pregnancy, so it is not advisable to take it. After taking tricyclic or other antidepressants, the child may experience withdrawal symptoms.

Side effects

If you experience any of the following side effects while on Doxepin, consult your doctor as soon as possible: Other possible side effects that may occur, especially at the beginning of therapy: Daytime tiredness, dry nose and mouth, sweating, dizziness, circulatory problems, palpitations, tremors, vision problems, constipation and weight gain. In this case you should also tell your doctor about it. Common side effects are anxiety, itching, allergic skin appearance, and decreased libido.

More rarely, circulatory collapse, urinary retention, fluid retention, sensations such as tingling, cold or heat sensations and ringing in the ears occur.

  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Manic mood, i.e. a pathological state of extreme euphoria
  • Sudden appearance of delusions or other sensory delusions
  • Change of the blood count (agranulocytosis = (almost) complete lack of granulocytes)
  • Purulent angina or another flu-like infection with high fever
  • Shaking Forest
  • Inflammation in the ear, nose, throat, anal or genital area

If you are taking or have recently taken other medicines, you must inform your treating physician, as interactions with other medicines may occur while taking Doxepin. Taking Doxepin can strengthen the effect of other drugs. These include other antidepressants, sleeping pills, analgesics (painkillers), neuroleptics, certain anti-allergics, anti-epileptic drugs such as carbamazepine.

MAO inhibitors are also used to treat depression. Before taking doxepin, MAO inhibitors must be discontinued 14 days before. Otherwise severe side effects may occur such as loss of consciousness, high fever, seizures, severe blood pressure fluctuations or delirium. This combination of symptoms is also known as serotonin syndrome.
