Copper Zinc Solution

Products

Copper zinc solution is not commercially available as a finished drug in many countries and must be prepared in a pharmacy as an extemporaneous preparation. Retailers can also order it from specialized service providers. The copperzinc solution is also called Eau d’Alibour (Alibour was a Frenchman). The terms “Dalibour solution” and “Dalibouri aqua”, which are also used, are not linguistically correct.

Composition and production

Preparation according to Pharmacopoea Helvetica 10:

A Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate 0.10 g
B Zinc sulfate heptahydrate 0.40 g
C Camphor Spirit 1.0 g
D Purified water 98.5 g

To the freshly boiled purified water cooled to 20°C, add the camphor spirit. The mixture is shaken well until it is completely clear. Then the copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate and the zinc sulfate heptahydrate are dissolved in it. The copper-zinc solution is a clear, almost colorless, camphor-smelling liquid. In the Formularium Helveticum (FH) the preparation of a concentrated solution is described (Dalibouri aqua fortis FH). It additionally contains polysorbate 20. The corresponding preparation instructions can be found in the DMS. In earlier editions of Pharmacopoea Helvetica, saffron tincture was included in the solution.
