Corneal Ulcer: Therapy

General measures

  • Contact lens wearers should refrain from wearing contact lenses as long as the corneal ulcer has not healed.
  • Preventive measures:
    • If contact lenses are worn, they should not be worn for too long.
    • Furthermore, pay attention to an appropriate and daily care of the contact lenses.
    • People who are exposed to a higher risk of injury to the eye area due to their profession, such as welders, should always wear protective goggles at work.

Conventional non-surgical therapy methods

  • Tear substitute fluid should be supplied if the tear is deficient and the cause is not infectious.
  • For lack of eyelid closure, viscous gels or ointment dressings have proven effective. A so-called watch glass bandage prevents the drying of the eye. Here, a plaster is stuck airtight over the eye. Through a watch glass-like (transparent) surface is possible to see.
