Costs for the spiral

Depending on the type of spiral, the costs vary. The copper spiral is about 120 to 300 Euros, while the hormone spiral is somewhat more expensive at up to 400 Euros. The costs are made up of the actual price of the spiral, the value of the other materials and the cost of insertion.

In addition, there is usually an initial position check with the ultrasound, although this is actually always paid for by the health insurance companies. Every further position check, which should be done once a year, is again in the lower two-digit range. The removal of the spiral, depending on the type after three to five years, costs about 20 to 50 Euros.

The costs of contraception are fully covered for girls and young women until they reach the age of 18. Up to the age of 22, women must make an additional payment of 10 percent of the sales price. If there is a medical need for a contraceptive coil, the health insurance companies will also pay for the cost of the coil later. The first position check by means of ultrasound is generally covered by the health insurance companies, while further checks usually have to be paid for by the women themselves.

How is a spiral removed?

After three to five years, the coil must be removed or changed and the coil must also be removed if the patient wishes to have a child or if there are any complaints. For this purpose the coil has return threads. These hang down from the bottom of the actual IUD and lie just outside the cervix.

First, the gynecologist uses the metal spatula again so that the cervix is clearly visible. If the threads are then visible, the gynecologist can grasp the threads with small pliers and pull out the coil. This is almost painless in most cases, as the IUD folds over and slides out.

If the stitches are no longer visible, the gynecologist must examine the cervix and grip the IUD directly with fine pliers. After removal, a new IUD can be inserted directly. Removal and replacement can be carried out at any time and does not necessarily have to be adjusted exactly to the menstrual cycle.

In rare cases, the IUD may have slipped or even migrated into the abdomen to such an extent that surgical removal is necessary. To rule out such a complication, an ultrasound scan of the vagina can be performed before the procedure and the position can be checked. Depending on the manufacturer, the IUS can remain in the uterus for three to five years until a change is necessary.

The copper coil can remain in place significantly longer at around ten years. However, if the IUD slips, a change must be made immediately. If symptoms occur, it may also be necessary to change to another IUD or another method of contraception.

If the IUD is left in place for a longer period of time, the contraceptive effect may decrease significantly, especially with the hormone IUD. A IUD must be removed after three to five years or sometimes sooner. When the IUD is removed, there are no material costs for the IUD itself.

Only the actual work involved is included as a cost factor. Depending on the type of spiral and individual factors of the woman, the costs for the removal are between 20 and 50 Euros. In most cases, these costs are not covered by health insurance. In the case of a removal that is necessary at an early stage for medical reasons, the health insurance company can partially cover the costs.
