Costs

If there is a medical indication for circumcision, such as phimosis, the costs incurred are covered by the health insurance company. If the operation is to be performed without a corresponding reason, for example for religious reasons, the costs must be borne by the patient and are calculated according to the scale of fees for doctors. A distinction is made here between whether the minor procedure is performed as an outpatient or with subsequent inpatient stay in hospital. It is also important whether the operation is performed under local or even general anaesthesia. From these external circumstances, a price range for circumcision of 200 to 700 Euros is derived.

Child circumcision

Up to infancy, phimosis in the form of a sticking together of the foreskin is very common and is considered completely normal when there are no symptoms. Consequently, phimosis in small children, if asymptomatic, does not require treatment and in 90 percent of cases it grows out with age. However, if symptoms occur or if circumcision is necessary in the child due to other causes, the course of the procedure is largely analogous to circumcision in adulthood.

The only decisive difference is the type of anaesthesia, as local anaesthesia is preferred in adults. The operation of the child is usually performed under general anaesthesia, from which the longer duration of the patient’s stay in the operation centre can be deduced. Due to the circumcision under general anaesthesia, the child remains under supervision in a recovery room in order to be able to treat possible after-effects. This results in a total length of stay of the child in the clinic, which usually does not fall below three hours.
