Costs of a laser treatment | Root canal treatment by laser

Costs of a laser treatment

In the case of a root canal treatment, the health insurance only covers the costs of sufficient treatment. This includes the drilling of the tooth, rinsing with the different solutions and filling with gutta-percha. Other additional services are to be paid privately.

These include treatment with a microscope or the use of a laser device. Not every dentist has such a laser and the corresponding further training, which are associated with acquisition costs, so that it is necessary to find out in advance where such a therapy can be carried out and how much it costs. These costs can vary from dentist to dentist and are charged per channel to be treated. Thus the costs per channel can be between 20€ and 100€.Before the treatment, the dentist prepares a treatment and cost plan in which the exact costs are specified.

Necessity of a laser treatment

Most root canal treatments are still carried out without laser treatment, which on the one hand is related to the costs and the required instruments, but on the other hand is also due to the fact that the use is very controversial and many practicing dentists see no sense in its application. Some are of the opinion that the treatment is useful and the bacteria are killed better, which is also proven by studies, but others see no benefit and believe that the laser does not offer any added value, as it cannot reach all areas and roughens the surface unnecessarily. The best thing to do is to get sufficient information from your trusted dentist and get a second opinion. In combination with the rinses, the laser can be a useful addition and minimize the risk of a revision. A natural tooth offers a better aesthetic and functional alternative than a dental restoration, so it is important to preserve the natural teeth.

Is a root canal treatment with laser useful?

Root canal treatment using a laser can be particularly useful for teeth with a curved canal anatomy. In this way, even hard-to-reach areas can be reached and the microorganisms killed. Instruments for root canal treatment, such as narrow files, always carry the risk of getting stuck and breaking off as a result.

The dental laser, however, has a thin glass fiber that only has to be brought to the right place and does not scrape material from the walls. A high temperature is generated, which is sufficient to kill bacteria and the tissue. For the experienced user, laser treatment is also more time-saving – in other words, root canal treatment is faster.

The root canal is emptied quickly and thoroughly. It can also be advantageous to protect the surrounding tissue. According to some studies, the prognosis of the tooth can be improved in the long term by laser treatment.
