Costs of a root canal treatment

Whether the costs for a root canal treatment are covered by health insurance must be discussed individually with the patient and the situation. In general, health insurance companies will only cover the costs if the treatment can ensure that the tooth is saved. The condition is that the dentist can treat the tooth to the tip and also fill it. Especially in the case of molars, however, the root canals are often curved at the end, which makes it not always possible to fill them to the tip.

There are further restrictions for the molars, at least one of which must be fulfilled. The first restriction is that the affected tooth must be in a row of teeth that is healthy. The second limitation is that if the affected tooth already has a denture, it can be preserved by the treatment.

The third and last exception is that the treatment can avoid a free-end situation on the affected tooth, so that this tooth is the last tooth in the row. If a molar tooth does not meet the conditions, the health insurance company will only cover the extraction of the tooth. If you decide to have a root canal treatment anyway, it has to be paid privately.

An average of 1000 Euros per tooth is then due for one treatment. If the costs are covered by the health insurance company, it will pay for the following treatment steps: Drilling, disinfection and filling of the root canals. The chance of success is about 60% – 70%.

If one wants to increase the chances of success, further, more specialized methods are necessary, which allow an even more precise analysis and treatment of the root canals. However, these must be carried by the patient himself. This would include microscopic root canal treatment, for example. If you have private insurance, the situation changes, as private health insurance companies are usually more accommodating and cover further treatments.
