Costs of the measles vaccination

The cost of the Mérieux vaccine from Sanofi Pasteur MSD, which is exclusively directed against measles viruses, is €33.43. As with all vaccinations recommended by the STIKO (Standing Vaccination Commission), the vaccination costs in Germany are fully covered by the statutory health insurance scheme. For privately insured persons the assumption of costs or partial assumption of costs depends on the individually selected tariff.

Measles vaccination in the GDR

In the GDR the measles vaccination was introduced in 1970, in the FRG only three years later, in 1973. In the GDR – in contrast to the Federal Republic – there was a compulsory vaccination since the introduction of the vaccination. Although this was not always strictly adhered to, it fundamentally ensured high vaccination rates and a sharp decline in measles cases.

However, the vaccination protection was not quite as effective as it is today, since only a monovalent vaccination was administered. This means that only one vaccination instead of two was given until 1986. Today, too, people are again considering making vaccination compulsory in order to finally eradicate measles.
