Course and possible complications

A bruise on the knee is usually completely harmless and heals without medical intervention. The healing process and the time until the bruise on the knee is completely healed depends mainly on how quickly the treatment is initiated. In rare cases, however, a bruise on the knee can lead to severe bruising and/or bleeding into the joint capsule.

For this reason, surgical treatment must be initiated for some of the patients affected. If the injured area is loaded again too early, there is a risk of serious complications. One of the most common complications of a bruise on the knee is increased pressure in the muscles adjacent to the knee joint, which can lead to a so-called “compartment syndrome”.
