Course of disease in cavernous hemangioma | Cavernous hemangioma – How dangerous is it?

Course of disease in cavernous hemangioma

The disease usually occurs during birth or a few days after birth. Either the cavernous hemangioma disappears after months or years, it remains the same size and does not cause any problems, or it grows and needs treatment. No new hemangiomas develop in the course of life, but they can only be discovered at an advanced age when they grow in size very slowly. With adequate treatment, life expectancy is normally not limited.

Prognosis of a cavernous hemangioma

The prognosis is very good in most cases. Very often a cavernous hemangioma recedes spontaneously and never causes problems again. Even in cases where the hemangioma increases in size, the prognosis is very positive with appropriate treatment.

In cases of cavernous hemangiomas that occur at more critical sites, such as the brain or airways, the prognosis may be somewhat worse. In these cases, too, treatment greatly reduces the risk of severe disease progression. Only the risks associated with the removal of more complicated hemangiomas slightly worsen the prognosis.
