2-methyl-4-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-10H-thieno[2,3-b][1,5]benzodiazepine Chemical formula: C17H20N4S6-21⁄2H2O

Active ingredient

OlanzapineZyprexa® is used as a drug therapy for various psychiatric disorders. Fields of application are:

  • Schizophrenia
  • Mania
  • Bipolar disorders (prophylaxis)
  • Borderline fault
  • Delusional Depression

Effect

Antipsychotics are drugs that focus on the treatment of psychotic symptoms. The main mechanism lies in the reduction of the activity of the messenger substance dopamine in the brain. For those interested: Olanzapine is primarily used to block 5-HT2, D1-5 and mACh receptors. Tablets are available in dosages of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg and 20 mg. Enamel tablets are available in dosages of 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg and 20 mg. Ampoules are available in the dosage 10 mg

Side effect

Only very common (>10%) to common (1-10%) side effects are listed; occasional, rare or very rare side effects are not listed!

  • Increase in appetite with weight gain (overweight) is the most common NW. However, weight gain is usually limited and usually does not lead to overweight.
  • Increase of the blood sugar level (diabetes mellitus)
  • Swindle
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation (constipation)
  • Temporary increase of liver values (transaminases)

  • Rarely: Leukopenia (decrease in white blood cells)
  • Rarely: Thrombocytopenia (drop in blood platelets)

Interaction

The degradation of the drug is accelerated both by smoking and by taking carbamazepine at the same time. Fluvoxamine can slow down the breakdown of the drug.
