Cyst on the labia

Cysts are hollow spaces that are filled with fluid, blood, pus or sebum and surrounded by a capsule. They usually occur in tissues such as the skin, breast or internal organs. If cysts can be found on the labia, this often has an effect on the nearby Bartholin gland.

The paired glands are located in the rear area of the labia and enter the vaginal vestibule. The glands are responsible for secretion during sexual arousal or intercourse. This results in a secretion congestion, which in turn can lead to swelling in the female genital area.

Often women suffer from no pain at all. The cysts only become noticeable when they are palpated (e.g. chicken egg sized, roundish swelling). However, since the cysts are relatively close to the anus, in extremely rare cases an inflammation of the Bartholin glands can also occur, which can be very painful.

Patients with such complaints complain of pain when walking and even sitting.Provided that there are no complaints as a result of the cyst, the cyst is considered harmless and no compulsory treatment is necessary. If, however, a painful inflammation occurs, antibiotics or analgesic drugs are usually used to treat the cyst. In rare cases, a minor surgical procedure may be necessary to treat the abscess.

Pimples on the labia

Pimples in the pubic area occur more often than one might think. If they can be found in the labia region, this can often become a very painful event. In most cases the pimples can be found on the inside of the labia majora.

Even if the pubic area is an unusual area for the formation of pimples, this is an absolutely natural event. In the genital area there are many germs and bacteria and in combination with the ‘warm climate’, this is a perfect condition for pimples to develop. Another reason for the development of pimples is the intimate shaving with a too dull blade.

This can cause severe irritation of the labia. Another cause can be shower gels, which destroy the natural intimate flora. It is recommended to use only lukewarm water and mild soaps for cleaning the intimate area.

This should not cause any complaints. Pimples in the intimate area should only be expressed if one is sure that it is exclusively a clogged sebaceous gland. An anti-inflammatory ointment can then be applied.

The usual treatment options for pimples on other parts of the body should under no circumstances be applied to the genital area, as this area has a completely different milieu and therefore usual treatment methods often lead to a worsening of the situation. One ointment that is also suitable for use in the intimate area is zinc ointment. It has a disinfecting effect and dries out pimples. To prevent pimples in the intimate area, various creams are recommended, which are usually applied after shaving. However, care should be taken to ensure that the cream or product does not contain alcohol, as this will only irritate the relevant areas even more.
