Cystic Fibrosis: Or something else? Differential Diagnosis

Respiratory System (J00-J99)

  • Pleural effusion – accumulation of fluid in the pulmonary fissure between the lung and pleura.
  • Bronchiectasis (synonym: bronchiectasis) – persistent irreversible saccular or cylindrical dilatation of the bronchi (medium-sized airways) that may be congenital or acquired; symptoms: chronic cough with “mouthful expectoration” (large-volume three-layered sputum: foam, mucus, and pus), fatigue, weight loss, and decreased exercise capacity
  • Pulmonary fibrosisconnective tissue remodeling of the lungs, leading to functional impairment.
  • Toxic pulmonary edema – accumulation of water in the lung tissue caused by toxic damage.
  • Idiopathic pulmonary siderosis (Ceelen-Gellerstedt syndrome) – rare disorder of unclear etiology. An autoimmune process is suspected. A frequent simultaneous occurrence of lactose intolerance and celiac disease (gluten-induced enteropathy) has been described. Damage to the smallest blood vessels of the lungs leads to recurrent small but also larger hemorrhages into the lung tissue with deposits of hemosiderin. This gradually leads to increased production of connective tissue and thus to pulmonary fibrosis.

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

Musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (M00-M99).

  • Anti-GBM (glomerular basement membrane) disease (synonym: Goodpasture’s syndrome) – rare severe autoimmune disease predominantly involving the kidneys and lungs; rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis caused by autoantibodies against the basement membrane of blood vessels.
  • Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), formerly Wegener’s granulomatosis – necrotizing (tissue dying) vasculitis (vascular inflammation) of small to medium-sized vessels (small-vessel vasculitides), which is associated with granuloma formation (nodule formation) in the upper respiratory tract (nose, sinuses, middle ear, oropharynx) as well as the lower respiratory tract (lungs)
  • Vasculitides (vascular inflammations), unspecified.

Neoplasms – tumor diseases (C00-D48)

  • Bronchial carcinoma (lung cancer)
