Dandruff of the Head (Pityriasis Simplex Capitis): Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of pityriasis simplex capitis (dandruff of the head).

Family history

  • Are there any diseases of the skin and/or hair in your family?

Social history

  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • When does dandruff occur more, in summer or in winter?
  • Do other symptoms occur in addition to dandruff, such as itching or redness of the skin?
  • Do you have weeping skin or pustules (pus accumulation in the skin)?
  • In addition, do you have hair loss?
  • Do the dandruff occurs clustered when you have enjoyed certain foods?

Vegetative history including dietary history.

  • Do you wash your hair regularly? How often?
  • What kind of shampoo do you use?
  • Do you blow dry your hair regularly?
  • Do you eat a balanced diet?
    • Do you like to eat sweetened/sugared food?
    • Do you like to eat high fat foods?
  • Do you drink alcohol? If so, what drink or drinks and how many glasses per day?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (diseases of skin / hair; psoriasis).
