Definition

Daytime fatigue is a hypersomnic disorder and is characterized by increased sleepiness during the day, which cannot be explained by disturbed night sleep.

Classification of daytime tiredness

Daytime tiredness can be divided into three groups:

  • Narcolepsy
  • Primary hypersomnia
  • Behavioral sleep deprivation syndrome

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a chronic disease that usually begins between the ages of 15 and 25. symptoms:

  • Usually begins with daytime tiredness despite sufficient night sleep in unusual situations such as during a conversation or during dinner on
  • At a certain point patients can no longer fight it and have to take a short nap
  • However, the recovery afterwards usually lasts only for one to two hours
  • In the course of months to years, so-called cataplexies usually occur. Here, emotional excitement leads to a sudden loss of muscle tension. This can be so severe that the patient sinks.

    In milder forms, there is a sensation of soft knees or a sinking of the lower jaw. It lasts from a few glances to minutes, which the patient experiences while fully conscious. Sleep paralysis occurs in half of the patients. When waking up after a night’s sleep, the body muscles are completely paralyzed. This condition lasts for a few minutes and is experienced as very fearful.

  • The hypnagogic hallucinations are vivid imaginary images that occur while falling asleep and are usually negative in tone

Primary hypersomnia

symptoms:

  • Increased daytime tiredness with increased tendency to fall asleep with undisturbed night sleep
  • The naps during the day are not relaxing for the patients
  • And often a drowsiness occurs
  • Often patients are difficult to wake up in the morning
