Developmental deficits

Many children with reading and spelling difficulties show developmental delays when examined closely. The school problems that arise as a result are due to the fact that these children have not yet developed the necessary maturity in all required areas when they enter school. With regard to the developmental delays, a distinction must be made between: Often, the mental – emotional development is not taken into account enough at school enrollment. In order to assess the mental and emotional development of a child, at least the following areas should always be questioned:

  • Physical development
  • The physical load capacity
  • The development of cognitive and intellectual skills (e.g. : understanding of quantity and form, ability to differentiate (being able to determine differences), concentration)
  • Language development
  • Independence
  • Social competence, for example, by determining the ability to fit into a group (even if foreign children belong to it)
  • Physical development, which can be determined, for example, by a school medical examination.
  • The mental – emotional development, which is much more difficult to assess and includes the physical, as well as the psychological and social development of a child.

Due to the reduced ability to concentrate and pay attention, gaps and weaknesses often arise in school areas, which add to the problematic situation.

In principle, the combination of dyslexia and ADHD is possible and conceivable. However, it is more frequent and therefore more likely that problems at school arise as a result of the reduced ability to concentrate and pay attention and thus extend to other areas (e.g. arithmetic). In this case there is no partial performance weakness (dyslexia), but rather a reading and spelling weakness (LRS).
