Dexpanthenol has been approved in many countries since the 1940s as an ointment and since the 1970s as a cream (Bepanthen 5%, generics). Bepanthen products were originally introduced by Roche and acquired by Bayer in 2005.
Structure and properties
Dexpanthenol (C9H19NO4, Mr = 205.3 g/mol) exists as a colorless to pale yellow, viscous, hygroscopic liquid or as a white, crystalline powder and is very soluble in water.
Effects
Dexpanthenol (ATC D03AX03) is believed to have hydrating, wound-healing, and anti-inflammatory properties, among others. It is metabolized in the body to the vitamin pantothenic acid, which is a component of coenzyme A. Coenzyme A has central functions in many metabolic processes. It plays an important role in the formation and regeneration of the skin.
Indications
For the treatment of overused, dry and irritated skin, to support wound healing and epithelialization, in skin diseases and for interval treatment as part of topical cortisone therapy.
Dosage
According to the SmPC. The cream is applied locally one to several times daily.
Contraindications
The cream is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity. Full precautions can be found in the drug label.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines are not known.
Adverse effects
Rarely, allergic skin reactions may occur.
