Diagnosis | Cervical spine syndrome and headaches

Diagnosis

The first step in the diagnosis of the cervical spine syndrome is a detailed doctor-patient consultation (anamnesis). During this conversation, the patient should describe in as much detail as possible the neck and headaches he/she has experienced. Especially the exact localization and quality (dull, pulling, stabbing) of the headache can provide a first indication of the underlying problem.

This is followed by a physical examination, during which the mobility of the entire spine is checked. In addition, the attending physician performs a series of special functional tests that can provide further clues as to the possible cause of the cervical spine syndrome with neck and headaches. The back and neck muscles are also examined for tension.

Furthermore, both the sensitivity and the strength of the arms should be examined. Restrictions of the reflexes can indicate an exact localization of the underlying disease. If there are any abnormalities in these areas, a neurologist should also be involved in the diagnosis.

After a possible suspected diagnosis has been made, the treating physician usually orders further steps. In the presence of a cervical spine syndrome with neck and headaches, x-rays of the cervical spine are usually taken. If this procedure does not lead to the desired goal, an additional MRI can be made.

Prevention

Complaints in the area of the spine can be prevented in many cases. Especially diseases affecting the cervical spine segments are often caused by overstrain and postural deformities. For this reason, it is important to ensure sufficient movement and stabilization of the spine by building up muscles.

People who often work in a sitting position (e.g. at the computer) can prevent the cervical spine syndrome and the headaches associated with it by taking regular breaks. During these work breaks, relaxation exercises for the neck, shoulder and back muscles should be performed. This topic may also be of interest to you: Exercises at the workplace during PC work
