Diagnosis | Circulatory disturbance of the retina

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of circulatory disorders of the retina is made by the ophthalmologist. The ophthalmologist can detect vasoconstrictions of the retina by looking at the back of the eye with a dilated pupil. A timely diagnosis is especially important, since the retinal cells are very sensitive to oxygen deficiency. Diabetics in particular should therefore have regular ophthalmological examinations.

Therapy

The sudden loss of vision due to the occlusion of an arterial vessel represents an ophthalmologic emergency and must be treated immediately. Blood-thinning agents in particular play an important role in acute treatment. It is similar in the treatment of venous occlusions of the retina.

In further treatment, laser treatment of the occluded vessels may be indicated. In order to prevent circulatory disorders or to avoid renewed vascular occlusion, a reduction of the above-mentioned risk factors is of utmost importance in any case, as otherwise there is a risk of blindness.
