Diagnosis | Hanging eyelid

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of ptosis itself is purely clinical. The drooping eyelid is more a symptom of other diseases than an independent disease and is immediately recognizable from the outside. However, in the following some examinations must be performed to make the actual diagnosis.

In this case, special imaging procedures are necessary to examine the brain. A blood test can also provide information as to whether poisoning is involved. In most cases, ptosis is accompanied by other specific and unspecific symptoms, which limits the diagnosis.

Prognosis

The prognosis for ptosis depends on the cause and the type of treatment. After surgical correction, the prognosis is very good and the affected persons usually do not suffer from drooping eyelids again. In stroke patients the prognosis depends on the start of treatment.

If treatment is started early, all symptoms of loss may decrease, while if treatment is started later, the damage may be permanent. Also in the case of encephalitis, the start of treatment is crucial for survival and the possible regression of neurological damage such as ptosis.
