Diagnosis | Hoarseness due to an allergy

Diagnosis

Allergic asthma of other causes also often leads to hoarseness and impairment of the voice. If the hoarseness lasts longer than two to three weeks or if swallowing difficulties or fever are added, a doctor should be consulted to exclude other causes. The patient’s medical history often gives the first indication of the cause of the hoarseness. With the help of a laryngoscope, a device for examining the larynx, the cause of the hoarseness can usually be determined. Whether an allergy is present can be determined by a specialist (dermatologist, allergologist, lung specialist) with the help of an allergy test.

Therapy

If hoarseness is due to an allergy, hoarseness is often improved by the administration of an antihistamine or antiallergic, which relieves the symptoms of the allergy. Other household remedies such as teas with a little honey, gargling with salt water, sweets with sage or Icelandic moss and especially sparing the voice can also improve hoarseness. This also includes avoiding tobacco products, alcohol or strongly spiced food. There are also special preparations to suck for hoarseness in combination with an allergy.

Homeopathy for hoarseness

Depending on what the reason for the hoarseness is, different homeopathic remedies can be used: It is recommended that the therapy be performed by a trained homeopath who can find the appropriate remedy for the symptoms.

Prophylaxis

There are several ways to successfully treat the allergy. One can treat it symptomatically with the above mentioned anti-allergic drugs, but also causally by hyposensitization. Here the immune system is accustomed by regular injections, drops or tablets to the allergen, so that it comes with renewed allergen contact to no excessive situation and the body does not strike alarm.
