Diagnosis | Mood swings

Diagnosis

Mood swings can have psychiatric causes, but they can also be caused by physical processes, such as changes in hormone balance. Therefore, a detailed diagnosis is important in order to be able to adapt the therapy to the corresponding cause. The necessary examinations can include both physical and psychological factors.

Prognosis

The prognosis depends strongly on the underlying clinical picture. It is therefore difficult to make an all-encompassing statement about it. In the long term, the prognosis of mood swings is quite favorable, although acutely life-threatening situations can occur, especially if mood swings occur in the course of a psychiatric illness.

Prophylaxis

Since a lack of lithium in the body is assumed to be one of the causes of mood swings, there are considerations to supply lithium to the body prophylactically over a longer period of time. However, there is not yet any research that would be conclusive enough to prove this measure. The preventive use of meditation and relaxation exercises is also being discussed.

In general, early detection and early and successful therapy is an important prerequisite for a good prognosis. If mood swings are perceived as severe, it is therefore advisable to consult a doctor.
