DIAGNOSIS of a furuncle on the thigh

At the beginning of each examination there is a questioning of the affected person or the relatives, if the patient himself is not able to express himself adequately. In technical terminology, this is referred to as an own and foreign anamnesis. In the case of a furuncle on the thigh, these anamnesis can provide important information about the cause of the development.

It is helpful if the patient or the relatives consider what information is important for the doctor even before the visit to the doctor. Answering the W-questions (what, how, when, where, etc.) can be helpful.

After the anamnesis, the doctor will look at the affected area and palpate it. The general skin condition and appearance of the patient will also be considered holistically. If the boil is open, a smear is taken to detect the pathogen. If there is an increased incidence of boils, the blood sugar level and, if necessary, other parameters in the blood are measured.

SYMPTOME of a furuncle on the thigh

As a rule, a boil on the thigh shows the classic signs of inflammation: Redness, warming, swelling and pain. Mostly it is pressure-sensitive and elastic. If clothes rub against the furuncle, it can hurt when moving of any kind or even when resting.

On closer inspection, a hair can be seen in the middle. Pus can escape from a mature boil. The pus is usually yellowish and can sometimes smell unpleasant.

With more severe courses, weakened immune system or basic diseases, in which a weakness of the immune system accompanies, a general feeling of illness, exhaustion, fever, chills and other flu-like complaints can be added. This occurs less frequently, but should be taken seriously as fever is a sign that the bacteria have entered the bloodstream. This implies the risk of blood poisoning.

In this case, medical treatment must be given immediately. In principle, complications with furuncles on the thigh are rare. However, if they do occur, a quick and adequate therapy is required. If drowsiness, circulatory failure and shock conditions occur, emergency medical assistance is required.
