First of all, physical causes for psychosis should be excluded. These include diseases of the thyroid gland, various infectious diseases and other psychiatric disorders, but also drug use. For this purpose, blood tests, neural fluid punctures, physical examinations but also imaging such as MRI and X-ray examinations or ECG and EEG are performed.

Subsequently, there are various criteria that must be met for a diagnosis to be made. According to ICD-10, the international classification of diseases used in this context, one of the following criteria must be covered for at least one month Ego- Disorder (thought inspiration, thought withdrawal, thought propagation, …) Delusional phenomenon with realistic contents (paranoia, poisoning delusion, …) Delusional phenomenon with unrealistic contents (belief to have superpowers, …) hearing of voices (acoustic hallucination) Or for at least one month at least two of the following symptoms: Hallucinations of all sensory organs (e.g. seeing ghosts) Formal thought disorders (neologisms, thought tearing off, thought distraction, …) Catatonia (immobility, silence, repetition, acting in the opposite direction to what was actually intended, …) Negative symptoms (apathy, speech depletion, social withdrawal, …) Behavioral changes

  • Formal thinking disorders (word creation, thought tearing off, distorted thoughts, …)
  • Catatonia (motionlessness, silence, repetition, acting in the opposite direction to what was actually intended, …)
  • Negative symptoms (apathy, speech impoverishment, social withdrawal, …)
  • Changes in behaviour

Psychologists and psychiatrists have various tests with which they can diagnose schizophrenia or schizophrenic psychosis.

The diagnosis should therefore always be made professionally by a doctor or psychotherapist. Self-tests from the Internet are not a reliable method to diagnose schizophrenia or acute psychosis, but they can be a support for the patient and his relatives to find the way to a psychiatrist.
