Diagnosis of growth pain in the foot

Growth pain is a typical exclusion diagnosis for pain in the foot. It is therefore only given if no other cause for the pain in the foot can be found. Other causes for the pain can be injuries and infections, but rheumatism and tumors can also cause similar complaints.

With the help of the physical examination as well as various apparatus-based examination methods, such diseases can be ruled out. Rheumatic diseases can be ruled out by means of a blood test. Tumors and infections of bones are visible in the X-ray image. Minor injuries and infections of soft tissues can be excluded in the MRI.

Associated symptoms

In addition to the growth pain in the foot, pain in other parts of the body may also be noticeable. In most cases, the growth pain affects both feet, and it is not uncommon for the pain to occur simultaneously in the calves. Those who already suffer from growth pain in the feet can also experience growth pain in the knees and thighs and in the arms.

Growth pain in the joints and muscles of the arms and legs is often accompanied by stomach or headaches. It is not yet clear whether these are rather the expression of psychological discomfort or whether there is a concrete connection with pain-inducing substances. Since the growth pains often occur at night and the children are awakened by them, fatigue is often added to the symptoms.

This in turn can increase the headaches. In extreme cases, concentration disorders and a drop in performance are the result. Children who do not feel their pain is taken seriously or whose complaints are not adequately addressed can also react very anxiously and uncertainly to the symptoms.

If they frequently experience that they wake up in pain at night and are not well cared for, sleep disorders and fear of going to bed can develop. However, these accompanying symptoms can easily be prevented. When should one worry about the child? Emergency with the child
