Diagnosis | Oily hair due to hormones

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of oily hair is primarily made by looking in the mirror. To find out whether the hormones are partly to blame, they can be determined in the blood count or in the urine. If there are no other, more serious symptoms besides oily hair, no further diagnosis is necessary.

Therapy

Women who use the pill can be prescribed a preparation that inhibits excessive sebum production after consulting their gynecologist. These reduce not only the occurrence of oily hair but also of oily skin and acne. In cases of androgen overproduction, there is the possibility of drug intervention.

Drugs inhibit the androgen receptor, which passes on the effect of the excess hormones to the body cells. In order to improve oily hair, it is important not to strain it too much. Strains such as an excess of care products, hot blow-drying, frequent wearing of a cap or washing with highly degreasing shampoos should be avoided.

Especially the use of degreasing shampoos creates a vicious circle that is difficult to break again. By artificially drying out skin and hair, the sebaceous glands are constantly stimulated to produce more secretion, so that over time the hair becomes greasy more and more and faster. Instead, the hair should be washed in the morning with mild shampoos and lukewarm water.
