Diagnosis | Pain over the buttocks

Diagnosis

The diagnosis is made after a detailed patient interview in which the patient describes his pain in terms of its nature, occurrence, intensity and localization. A physical examination is also important. Here the doctor looks for possible redness or swelling, bloody or purulent discharge from fistulas, but also for the condition of the muscles and connective tissue.

To rule out hemorrhages, a digital-rectal examination may be necessary, in which the doctor palpates the rectum from the inside. A more precise diagnosis can then be initiated after a suspected diagnosis has been made. Here, for example, in the case of functional disorders of the vertebral joints, an X-ray examination can be connected. The therapy depends on the diagnosis.

Therapy

Therapy varies depending on the cause of the discomfort above the buttocks. Surgical therapy may be necessary for fistulas. In this case, any abscesses that may have formed are opened up, thus creating an outlet for the wound secretion.

Occasionally, a recurrence, i.e. a fistula that has reappeared, may make a second operation necessary. Smoking and alcohol consumption probably favour the development. Eczema can often be addressed by treating the underlying disease.

A fungal infection should be treated with appropriate medication so that the eczema can heal afterwards. Hemorrhoids can be removed surgically. Good hygiene and the right underwear support healing and prevent the occurrence of such diseases.

If the complaints occur due to problems of the musculoskeletal system, physiotherapy as a conservative therapy is a good way to eliminate the problems. If necessary, a painkiller can also be used. If the pain is resistant to therapy, for example in the case of advanced hip arthrosis, surgery may be necessary.

Duration

The duration of the healing process depends strongly on the cause of the symptoms. Coccyx fistulas can be chronic or acute. After an operation, the patient is usually free of symptoms quickly, but relapses can occur.

Chronic coccyx fistulas can lead to intermittent symptoms in the long term before the patient sees a doctor. The healing of eczema depends strongly on its cause. Once the underlying disease is treated and controlled, healing can begin.

Before then, it can be difficult to get rid of eczema for good. In the case of orthopedic complaints, the duration of the complaint depends strongly on the corresponding clinical picture and the individual treatment.Chronic, degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis cannot be cured, so although symptoms can be controlled by therapy, they often do not disappear completely. Complaints caused by acute overloading, on the other hand, usually disappear quickly.
