Diagnosis | Pannus on the eye

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of pannus of the eye can be made based on the external appearance of the disease. The physician recognizes the growths and blood vessels in the cornea, which are accompanied by clouding. The corneal clouding can be assessed with a slit lamp examination. The diagnosis of a trachoma, which is almost non-existent in industrialized countries, can be made by a smear of the conjunctiva and cornea, whereby the Chlamydia bacteria are then identified.

Therapy

Depending on the stage of the underlying disease the patient is in, antibiotic therapy (for chlamydia infections) is sufficient or an additional operation must be performed. During this procedure, the scar tissue is removed and the possible malposition of the eyelid, which is caused by the proliferation, is corrected. If the disease is particularly advanced, i.e. if the cornea is already very severely scarred and therefore vision is impaired, a so-called keratoplasty (corneal transplantation) can be performed. This is a replacement of the cornea, through which vision is improved again.
