Diagnosis | Pus in the navel

Diagnosis

In order to make a diagnosis of pus in or from the navel, a physical examination and medical consultation are usually sufficient. The development of pus already suggests an inflammation caused by bacteria. To make a diagnosis, the doctor must also identify the most likely cause of the bacterial inflammation. This is then usually based on the patient’s accompanying circumstances such as age and secondary diseases, as well as the examination and examination of the navel.

Duration

How long the bacterial inflammation with pus formation lasts depends on the cause on the one hand, and on the other hand on how quickly and consistently an appropriate treatment is carried out. In otherwise healthy people, the inflammation will also heal faster than in people with a limited immune system, such as the elderly or diabetics (“diabetics”). In most cases the inflammation will improve after a few days and pus will no longer occur.

In rare cases, however, a prolonged inflammation and thus pus formation at the navel can occur over several weeks. If there is no improvement despite treatment, the doctor should be consulted as soon as possible.
