Diagnosis | Red spots around the navel

Diagnosis

In the case of red spots on the navel, all symptoms that occur must be taken into account in a conversation with the doctor (anamnesis), which will limit the possible cause. During a physical examination, they are looked at closely and their spread on the body is observed so that the cause can be further limited. Blood tests can indicate inflammation values and can be examined for pathogens or antibodies.

Therapy

The therapy depends on the underlying disease. Mosquito bites usually do not need to be treated. If a strong itching occurs, household remedies such as onion slices, honey or cold compresses can be applied to the bite.

Itch-relieving ointments (e.g. Fenistil®) from the pharmacy can also provide relief. Viral diseases are treated by resting and drinking a lot. However, if it is shingles, an antiviral agent is normally only used in severely weakened and elderly patients. Painkillers are also given for relief.

If the red spots around the navel are caused by bacteria (e.g. typhoid fever), the antibiotic is the remedy of choice. If an allergic reaction is triggered, the alleged allergen (e.g. detergent) should be avoided. If neurodermatitis is the cause, a cortisone ointment prescribed by a doctor can be applied in acute and strong attacks.

Duration

How long the red spots remain on the navel also depends on the underlying disease. If the triggering allergen (e.g. clothing) is omitted, the red spots should disappear after a few days. With neurodermatitis, the rash can occur from time to time.

If it is a childhood disease or bacteria, the eczema usually disappears within a few days. In the case of shingles, the symptoms usually subside after two to four weeks.
