Diagnosis | Skin rash with red spots

Diagnosis

In this type of rash it is useful to find out the cause of the skin reaction as soon as possible, a visit to the doctor is usually unavoidable. The most important point in the diagnosis is a detailed doctor-patient consultation (anamnesis), in which existing previous illnesses, current medication income, risk factors for various infectious diseases and other points that can be the cause of red spots are asked. A description that is as honest as possible (even if it is about unpleasant facts) can already make a decisive contribution to finding the cause.

The doctor will then examine the relevant parts of the body and take a close look at the rash with a magnifying glass. In some cases, further examinations may be necessary. The doctor may send swabs of the affected skin areas, tissue samples (biopsy) or blood samples for laboratory diagnosis.

If an allergic rash is suspected, an allergy test is recommended. Especially in these cases, the importance of a comprehensive medical history is clearly reflected in the fact that an allergy test can only be performed for a relatively small number of possible allergens. In advance, it is therefore necessary to discuss with the treating physician what the person affected ate before the rash appeared, for example, whether a new detergent was used or whether previously unknown drugs were used.

Therapy

The basis of an effective therapy for skin rashes with red spots is the knowledge of the exact cause of the disease. In case of an allergic skin rash it is essential to avoid the allergen in the future and to stop the immune reaction with suitable medication. In most forms of rash, ointments and creams can help to alleviate the symptoms.

If an infection or an organ disease is the cause of the rash, treatment must be targeted to the pathogen or the underlying disease. However, many herbal active ingredients are also well suited for the treatment of rashes by relieving itching and having an anti-inflammatory effect. By moisturizing and supplying important nutrients, they also help to make the skin more resistant.
