Diagnostics

The diagnostic procedure prior to an abdominoplasty should be determined individually according to a special anamnesis and indicative findings. Pre-existing underlying diseases, weight fluctuations, pregnancy and previous operations should be taken into account. During the clinical examination, the skin and subcutaneous fatty tissue are assessed.

Possible scars and a possible weakness of the abdominal muscles must be examined. This is done by palpation of the abdominal wall under tension. After an informative discussion about possible risks and complications, a surgical correction can be performed.

How long are you on sick leave afterwards?

The patient’s inability to work after an abdominoplasty depends on the activity the patient performs. A job in the office can be resumed after one week. However, if the patient is physically stressed during his or her job, three to four weeks of sick leave can be expected.

Aftercare

The follow-up treatment after an abdominoplasty is very important so that the scars can heal well and complications and deformities cannot occur. Postoperatively, a stepped bed positioning is carried out, whereby the upper body must not be stretched strongly. The suction drains are removed according to the outflow of wound secretions.

The stitches are removed after 2 weeks. The patient should wear support corsets day and night for six weeks. This is an abdominal belt with the function of compressing the underlying skin and promoting the growth of the tissue to the abdominal wall.

After that, the corset is only worn during the day for another six weeks. In addition, so-called scar care creams can be applied regularly to the scars, thus reducing scarring. Slight pain and pulling in the wound area are normal in the first days after the operation. The swelling will go down in a few weeks. The final result is only visible after 3 months.

When will you be allowed to do sports again afterwards?

After the abdominoplasty, the patient is allowed to walk and walk normally. However, sports activities are prohibited. Cycling is allowed after about three weeks, abdominal muscle training after about three months.

In general, it is advisable to refrain from sports activities for at least six weeks. Ultimately, you should pay attention to when you feel comfortable and pain-free again as before. Only then is the body able to be exposed to sports activities again.
