Diagnostics | Burning sensation in the anus

Diagnostics

To examine the burning sensation in the anus, the doctor will ask you to take off your clothes and lie on an examination couch with bent legs. In many cases, the examining doctor will be able to identify the cause of an anal burning simply by looking at it: Haemorrhoids, anal eczema, fungal disease or anal fissures are a visual diagnosis for the doctor. The doctor will probably also examine them rectally to examine the mucous membrane in the rectum.

In some cases it may be necessary to take a smear to rule out fungal disease. It may also be necessary to take a small sample to make a microscopic examination of the tissue. If the doctor finds indications of intestinal disease during the examination, a colonoscopy may be necessary to find the exact cause.
