Diet for Liver Disease

A targeted diet for liver disease is designed to be easy on the liver. If you have liver health problems, foods that are particularly high in fat should be avoided. Also, hot spices and certain vegetables such as cabbage should not be eaten by liver disease patients, so as not to unnecessarily stress the liver. Alcohol should be completely taboo in liver disease.

This tastes good to the liver

In the case of liver disease, it is beneficial to eat a diet of lean cottage cheese, steamed vegetables and potatoes, simple carbohydrates and lean meat. The foods should be prepared gently and should not contain roasting substances (as they are produced by grilling or frying). Coffee is also unsuitable for liver patients.

It can be helpful to enrich the diet with artichokes or artichoke juice. Milk thistle extracts also support liver function. However, in certain liver diseases, this should only be done after consultation with the doctor.

Diet for diseases of the liver

  • 4-6 slices of wholemeal bread or 3-5 slices of bread and 50-60 g of cereal flakes per day.

  • 150-180 g brown rice or 200-250 g wholemeal pasta or 200-250 g potatoes (each cooked) per day.

  • 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day

  • 200-250 g of milk/yogurt/quark and 50-60 g of cheese preferably low-fat products.

  • 300-600 g of low-fat meat and sausage per week

  • Sea fish: 1-2 portions of 150 g per week

  • 3 eggs (incl. processed eggs in pasta, pastries, etc.) per week.

  • Fats and oils: max. 40 g spread and cooking fat and 10 g high-quality vegetable oil.

In addition, it is important that you drink enough. 1.5 to 2 liters of fluid you should take per day and thereby fall back primarily on still mineral water, herbal teas or juice spritzers.

If you suffer from liver disease, you should try to maintain or achieve normal weight. Also, make sure to eat several smaller meals a day, ideally between five and six meals

Another dietary tip for liver disease is to eat about 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. Prefer vegetable proteins from soy products or legumes.
