Difference to coccyx fistula

The term coccyx fistula is a somewhat misleading term. A fistula formation is characterized by the formation of ducts under the skin. In the case of coccyx fistulas, this is caused by an ingrown hair, for example.

The coccyx fistula thus represents the basis on which the coccyx abscess develops. However, the correct term for an ingrown hair in the coccyx region is “Sinus Pilonidalis”. Pilon is Latin for hair, Nidus Latin for nest. The ingrown hair causes an accumulation of pus, which can lead to abscess formation.
