Dimethyl Ether

Products

Dimethyl ether is found in pharmaceuticals, medical devices and personal care products as an excipient. It should not be confused with dimethyl ether.

Structure and properties

Dimethyl ether (C2H6O, Mr = 46.1 g/mol) is the simplest representative from the group of ethers with the structure CH3-O-CH3. It exists at standard conditions as a colorless gas that is soluble in water. Under pressure, it liquefies. At a higher concentration, an odor of ether is perceptible. Dimethyl ether has the same constitutional formula as ethanol (C2H6O).

Fields of application

  • Dimethyl ether is used in pharmaceuticals as a propellant (propellant gas), for example in the production of foams. It is also contained in cold spray and is used for the cryotherapy of warts.
  • Liquid used as a solvent.
  • For chemical syntheses.

Adverse effects

Dimethyl ether is a highly flammable gas that can cause fires and explosions. It must be kept away from heat, hot surfaces, open flames and other sources of ignition. Do not smoke. Containers under pressure should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Do not store in refrigerator or freeze. Empty containers should not be forcibly opened, tapped or burned.
