Disease development (pathogenesis)

The exact course of development of glomerulonephritis is still speculative for most forms. So far, it has been found out that immunological processes are an important factor, at least for some forms. During these immunological processes, the body produces antibodies (also called antigens) against certain pathogens (e.g. streptococci) to fight these germs.

In the course of the defense reaction, whole antigen-antibody complexes are formed, which can be deposited in the small renal vessels. There an inflammation occurs, which disturbs or destroys the filter function. In another form, the body produces antibodies directly against the filter system (e.g. against the basement membrane), which often affects the lungs as well as the kidneys (Goodpasture’s syndrome = renopulmonary syndrome). In Goodpasture’s syndrome, a preceding inflammation in the lung or the air-conducting system is currently being discussed.–> Continue to the topic symptoms glomerulonephritis
