Dithranol

Products

Medicines containing dithranol are no longer on the market in many countries. They can be imported from abroad or prepared as extemporaneous preparations in a pharmacy. Corresponding regulations can be found, for example, in the DMS. Dithranol is incorporated into petrolatum and thick kerosene, for example.

Structure

Dithranol (C14H10O3, Mr = 226.2 g/mol) is a photosensitive, yellow to brownish, crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. The substance dissolves in dilute alkali hydroxide solutions. It is a synthetic anthracene derivative.

Effects

Dithranol (ATC D05AC01) has antiproliferative, cytostatic, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Indications

For the treatment of psoriasis.

Contraindications

For complete precautions, see the drug label. Dithranol is irritating and should only come into contact with the area being treated. Carefully follow the directions in the package insert.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include discoloration of the skin and clothing and local skin irritation such as redness and burning. Allergic and contact allergic reactions are rare.
