Dizziness while driving a car

What is a dizziness while driving a car?

Basically, one distinguishes between several types of vertigo. There is the rotational vertigo, which feels as if you are on a merry-go-round. The swindling vertigo, on the other hand, is more comparable to the feeling on a ship in the waves of the high seas. In colloquial language, vertigo can also be described as a feeling of discomfort, in which you see “stars” or become black before your eyes. Such a dizziness can occur when driving a car as well as on a train, in an airplane or on a ship.

Causes

Dizziness while driving a car can be caused either by a permanent dizziness or by a short-term imbalance in the body. Often the dizziness is caused by the brain receiving different information. Through the movement while driving, the organ of balance sends the signal “movement”.

The eyes, on the other hand, are usually fixed on one point and signal the brain “standstill”. The feeling of dizziness can arise from this inconsistent information. The cause of a permanent or recurrent dizziness can be a disease of the organ of equilibrium.

These diseases occur more frequently in old age and can cause both a twisting and a swaying dizziness. The dizziness occurs over a longer period of time and can therefore also become noticeable when driving a car. Other causes can be diseases of the skull.

Heart disease can also cause dizziness when driving a car due to low blood pressure. Acute dizziness while driving a car can also be caused by an acute drop in blood pressure. Dizziness while driving often occurs acutely as a result of infections together with fever.

Cause cervical spine

The cervical spine is the transition between the skull bone and the spine. The spinal cord runs through the cervical spine with many extremely sensitive nerve fibers. When driving a car, the cervical spine is particularly at risk in an accident.

Due to the abrupt braking, the heavy head is thrown forward, but the body is held in the seat by the belt. Therefore, the entire force acts on the cervical spine and a so-called whiplash injury occurs. Whiplash can cause dizziness. Occasionally a strong tension of the muscles of the cervical spine also affects the head. Mostly headaches occur, but dizziness can also be caused by it.
