Dolphinidin: Functions

Clues to the functions of delphinidin are provided by the following study results.

Scientific studies

In one experimental study, delphinidin was able to prevent malignant glioblastoma cells (cells of a malignant brain tumor) from migrating. In another study, delphinidin was shown to counteract new vessel formation (a characteristic of malignant tumors) by inhibiting VEGF receptors (growth factor receptors). These results could be helpful in the development of new strategies to combat tumor diseases. Furthermore, animal studies showed that nasunin, as well as its aglucone delphinidin, which make up the major portion of anthocyanins in eggplant, could lower serum total cholesterol and increase “good” HDL cholesterol after oral administration in rats. These study results indicate that delphinidin has beneficial health effects in many ways.
