Dosage and application

  • Application of creams, ointments and solutions: For these products of the Bepanthen® range, a thin layer of the respective product has to be applied once or several times a day to the affected (mucous) skin layer. For the antiseptic wound cream the manufacturer’s recommendation is to apply the cream only once or twice a day. – Application in the eye: Bepanthen® Eye and Nose Ointment can be applied in the eye by placing a strand of ointment about 1 cm long in the conjunctival sac and then blinking to spread the ointment.

Contact lens wearers should remove the contact lenses before application as they may be damaged by the ointment. To apply Bepanthen® eye drops, one drop is placed in the affected eye, which is then closed (not pinched) and rolled. – Bepanthen® foam spray: After cooling the burn, the spray should be sprayed evenly thinly from a distance of 5 cm onto the affected area. The foam film does not need to be massaged in. – Bepanthen® Nasal Spray: For moistening and cleaning the nose, nasal spray can be given once or several times a day in up to two sprays into each nostril.

Side effects of Bepanthen®

Since the active ingredient in Bepanthen® is a provitamin that the body needs to survive and which is therefore not a major intervention in the body’s own processes, Bepanthen® has virtually no side effects. In rare cases, contact allergies, i.e. allergic reactions at the site of application, may occur. These are usually directed against one of the ingredients of the product base and not against the active ingredient dexpanthenol.

In such a case the product should be washed off. With Bepanthen® antiseptic wound cream an allergic reaction all over the body can occur very rarely. In the case of Bepanthen® eye and nose ointment, the cream may temporarily impair vision when applied to the eye. In this case you should refrain from participating in traffic.

Bepanthen® Wound and Healing Ointment can be applied to light wounds affecting the skin and mucous membrane surface to support natural wound healing. In general, the doctor’s or pharmacist’s instructions should be followed.

As a rule, the ointment should be applied to the affected skin area once or several times a day. The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the injury and the speed of healing. However, if there is no improvement after one week or if the symptoms have worsened, it is advisable to consult a doctor.

The treatment should be stopped immediately if a local allergic skin reaction, e.g. visible by: occurs. In addition, a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted promptly to avoid further reactions and, if necessary, to write down a new ointment that does not contain the active ingredient dexpanthenol. – Itching

The other ingredients cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol and wool wax may also cause minor local skin irritations (e.g. skin dermatitis). It should also be noted that the ointment in the anal or genital area in combination with white petroleum jelly reduces the tensile strength of a condom and therefore its safety in contraception may be reduced. Many people suffer from dry eyes. It can be caused by various factors such as mechanical stress from wearing soft or hard contact lenses, environmental stress factors such as dryness, heat, cold, cigarette smoke, air conditioning or polluted air, or during diagnostic and medical procedures.

In addition, certain jobs can be very stressful for the eye, such as long periods in front of a computer or a microscope. Bepanthen® eye drops now form a protective film for the outermost layer of the human eye, the cornea, and at the same time promote the moistening of the eye. This can help to alleviate the symptoms and prevent dry eyes (prophylactically).

The built up protective film is very similar to the natural tear film and does not impair vision in any way. The active ingredients dexpanthenol and hyaloronic acid guarantee a long-lasting effect and a good supply of moisture to the eye. As the drops are sterile and free of preservatives, they can be taken over a long period of time without hesitation.

Even for contact lens wearers there is no reason for long-term use. Bepanthen® eye drops are applied via single-dose containers. These can be opened by twisting off the head and then given into the eye.

A backward tilted head with a view to the forehead facilitates the application. If the lower limb is lifted slightly from the eye by careful pulling, a drop can be given directly into the conjunctival sac (Saccus conjunctiva). By carefully closing the eyes, the liquid is now regularly distributed on the cornea.

The drops can be used 3-5 times a day as needed. However, it is important to note that any residue after application should not be used again. The same applies in case of impurities or damage to the pack.

The container itself should not touch the eye and the expiry date of the drops should not be exceeded. If additional eye drops are to be taken, this must be done at 15 minute intervals, whereby Bepanthen® eye drops should always be used last. Bepanthen® eye drops have some known side effects.

On the one hand an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients can occur. If a burning or similar reaction occurs, wash out the eyes immediately and consult a doctor. On the other hand, a short-term impairment of the visual performance can occur after the application.

In this case, the use of machines, participation in road traffic or moving on unsecured terrain should be avoided until normal visual performance is restored. In rare cases, if irritation is already present or the eyes are very sensitive, Bepanthen® eye drops may cause further irritation of the eye. Also in case of inflammation or acute injury of the eye, a doctor should be consulted first, who can assess possible risks.

Finally, it should be mentioned that the phosphate buffer contained in the eye drops leads to a deposition of calcium salts in very rare cases in the presence of corneal surface damage (cornea) and prolonged use. The Bepanthen® eye drops contain the following ingredients: The drops are usually available in 20 x 0.5ml single-dose containers from the company Bayer Vital. They have to be stored between 2°-25°C in the folding box.

  • Sodium hyaluronate 0,15%. – Dexpanthenol 2%
  • Sodium chloride
  • Sodium monohydrogen phosphate
  • Sodium dihydrogen phosphate

Bepanthen® Eye and Nose Ointment promotes the body’s own wound healing and is used to support the repair processes of a light, superficial damage of the cornea, conjunctiva or nasal mucosa. It is used according to the doctor’s instructions.

Unless otherwise prescribed, the conjunctival sac or the nasal mucous membrane should be coated with the ointment several times a day. Please note that after use and contact with the nasal mucous membrane, the tube must not be used for application to the eye. The duration of application depends on the type of complaints and the healing process.

However, if there is no improvement after up to 4 days for the eye or 1 week for the nasal mucous membrane, a consultation with a doctor is necessary. When using Bepanthen® eye ointment, there are a few things to consider. First of all, it must be mentioned that the ointment must not be used when wearing contact lenses, because deposits are formed on the lenses and thus they are damaged.

In addition, when applied to or in the eye, a short-term impairment of visual acuity can occur, which is why the ability to drive and to operate machines is limited until visual acuity is restored. Interactions with other medications are not yet known. There are also no reasons for the limited use of Bepanthen® eye and nose ointment during pregnancy and lactation.

There are also no indications of impaired fertility and fertility. Special attention is not necessary in elderly patients. As with most drugs, Bepanthen® eye and nose ointment may also cause side effects: For example, allergic reactions to the active ingredient dexpanthenol or to one of the additives (see below) can occur.

If symptoms such as itching, reddening, overheating, rash, weeping, blistering, skin irritation or whole-body abnormalities such as a significant increase in heart rate (tachycardia), breathing difficulties (dyspnoea), extensive skin rash (dermatitis) occur, a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted promptly. The ingredients can also cause a local inflammatory reaction of the skin (e.g. contact dermatitis). In the case of known diseases of the body’s own defence (immune system) or of the skin or skin-forming system, particular care should be taken and a doctor should be consulted beforehand.
